CALGARY – Concerned community members throughout the Calgary area will gather at two Zellers locations on Saturday, October 13 to protest Target’s mistreatment of Zellers workers, and to ask the American-based retailer to respect the experience, service and loyalty of Zellers workers when converting existing retail locations to Target stores.

MISSISSAUGA – Over 300 demonstrators marched on Target Canada’s headquarters in Mississauga, Ontario, on August 22 to demand fairness for thousands of Zellers workers and countless Canadian communities. Since acquiring Zellers, Target has taken a Walmart-like approach to workers by refusing to respect the loyalty, experience and labour rights of Zellers workers.

As published in the Toronto Star

Angela Rankin knows exactly how much Target paid Zellers for the leases to 220 stores across Canada.
It wasn’t a billion. It was $1.8-billion — $1.825-billion to be more precise.

TORONTO – The National President of Canada’s leading retail union is calling on Canadians to take the Federal government to task for abandoning over 28,000 Zellers workers and discounting the important role of good retail jobs in the country’s local and national economies.

MONTREAL – The leading retail workers’ union in Quebec, and all across Canada, is taking Walmart to task for reneging on an important promise it repeatedly made to Zellers workers at Les Galeries Quatre Saisons in Sherbrooke, QC.

On June 6, the Harper government stuck its head in the corporate sandbox when it issued its approval for Target, an American multinational, to wipe out the jobs and security of more than 12,000 Canadian workers — the men and women who currently work at Zellers, whose rights in the eyes of the government are disposable.

City of Québec, QC – June 14, 2012 - A province-wide petition has been filed in the Quebec National Assembly, calling on the provincial Minister of Labour to require Target to comply with the Quebec Labour Act, and guarantee that workers at 35 Zellers stores in Quebec have the right to continue their employment — with their current seniority, salary and benefits — when Target takes over their store.

Target is one of the world’s most successful retailers and many Canadians are excited about shopping in new store locations that offer a weekly ad, coupons, regular store hours and the company’s popular redcard.

Target will soon be hiring in Canada and that is a good thing. But Target can be an even stronger force in our community by giving Zellers workers the respect they deserve. With your help, Target can be a leader in creating better, fairer jobs that benefit our communities today and well into the future.
